Shaner Garner spends most of her days on an airplane, as she travels for work, and recommends carrying all luggage on the plane instead of checking bags.

Faraway family and distant lands beckon summer travelers to pack up for explorative getaways.

But, the path between booking a vacation and arriving in a final destination can be long and discouraging.

These helpful hints move travelers from suitcase stuffing to feeling like a VIP, safely, securely and stylishly.

KNOW THE RULES

The best way to feel at ease when going through airport security is to be prepared.

“Many people are not aware of the 311 TSA rule that requires liquids and gels, even perfumes, to be in a container that is three ounces or less,” said Belinda Zephir, marketing manager at Pensacola Airport.”

Unprepared travelers are often asked to step out of line to reorganize their bags, or throw away items that are not permitted through security.

“We offer zip-lock bags, curbside check-in, and online printing to save passengers time and money, but the best way to ease worry is to pack properly before arriving at the airport. Nobody wants their vacation ruined by airport regulations.”

Details about the 311 TSA regulations are available at www.tsa.gov.

PACK FOR CARRY-ON TRAVEL

According to Zephir, airports no longer guarantee that valuables will make it through checked luggage. “We suggest you keep your luggage with you,” she said. “Travel lightly, and pack your bags to meet carry-on standards.”

Proper packing is key to fitting everything in a carry-on suitcase.

“There is nothing worse than losing luggage on a vacation or business trip and having to repurchase everything or wear dirty clothes,” said Shaner Garner, who frequently travels for the Studer Group. She suggests packing items that can be worn more than once to eliminate the need to check bags.

“For business, pack a dark suit with different shirts and accessories. Also, try to pack shoes that can be worn with many outfits. I always pack flip-flops, too. They are comfortable to throw on and don’t take up very much space.”

DON’T TRADE IN YOUR HEALTH

It might be tempting to throw caution to the wind when vacation time approaches. But, the point in getting away is to feel better, not worse, when you return.

“Make sure you are informed about the place you are visiting to properly prepare with vaccinations, antibiotics and over-the-counter preventatives like Tylenol or stomach aids,” said Dr. Odette Oliveras of Baptist Physician Associates.

She suggests packing a hand sanitizer, list of daily medications, and the phone number of a family doctor.

“Information about your medications and health history is as important to keep with you as a passport,” Oliveras said.

Also, she suggests staying fit and active during vacation to prevent injuries.

“Wear comfortable shoes in the airport to encourage movement,” Oliveras said. “Remember that hydration is key. Drink bottled water, and try to avoid caffeinated beverages.”

UTILIZE MONEY-SAVING RESOURCES

A few dollars saved on flights and hotel rooms leaves more money for entertainment and souvenirs. Airlines offer price breaks when flights are booked 21 days before departure. Try to plan ahead to get the best rate. Also, bear in mind that travel agents are more resourceful than discount Web sites such as Orbitz and Expedia.

“Travel agents have special access to airlines. They know about flights that get you home faster so you don’t have to spend money on another night in a hotel,” Garner said.

She also suggests signing up for the “frequent flier” or “miles programs” on airlines, rental cars, and hotels.

Gaining points can result in free breakfasts, complimentary beverages and priority over other travelers.

IT’S ALL IN THE BAG

A Pensacola woman has created a new toiletry case from 3-1-1 Travel Bag™ to help vacationers follow airport rules and pack for carry-on travel.

The Clear Bag System™ is a TSA-compliant, sturdy alternative to the standard plastic baggie. Instead of stuffing a bag with “travel-size” toiletries from the drugstore, travelers fill reusable, airless pumps with shampoo, lotion, any liquid or gel of their choice. The pumps fit neatly inside a clear, TSA-approved, fully zipped, reusable bag with enough room to add additional items.

3-1-1 Travel Bag, a developer of practical carry-on solutions for the modern traveler, was founded in 2006 by Linda Stinson, president and founder of the Pensacola-based business.

Stinson has served as boxer Roy Jones’ executive assistant for the last 14 years, traveling all over the world and establishing relationships within the sports, entertainment and travel industries.

After the Transportation Security Administration issued the restrictions on liquids and gels in carry-on luggage, Stinson researched on the TSA regulations and the various other travel products on the market, and she saw an overwhelming need for a more convenient and stylish alternative.

The kits, and matching jars, are available for $24.95 at Fillette Green Travel or online at www.clearbagsystem.com.
