For most people, a visit to the eye doctor means reading letters off a wall and picking out a new pair of frames. But for Gayla Rowland, M.D., founder of EnVision Eye Institute, eye care is a complex, deeply impactful branch of medicine that can completely transform a patient’s quality of life.

With 22 years of clinical expertise, Rowland has built a practice that bridges the gap between high-level medical treatment and personalized care. Today, with a thriving location in Crestview and a new practice in Pensacola, she is bringing a fresh, comprehensive approach to vision, health and aesthetics to the Gulf Coast.

A Blueprint Shifted by Destiny

Rowland’s path to medicine wasn’t entirely linear. Growing up in Crestview, her early sights were set on a completely different kind of design: architecture. She had even secured an architecture scholarship to Tulane University. However, when sudden family and financial circumstances required a change of plans, she pivoted at the last minute. To avoid heavy student debt and stay closer to her family, she accepted a full scholarship to Troy University.

It was during her final years of college that a bizarre, chaotic medical emergency permanently shifted her career trajectory. Her boyfriend’s mother accidentally mistook a bottle of superglue for contact lens rewetting drops, gluing both of her eyes shut. They rushed to a local ophthalmologist in Fort Walton Beach. Watching him calmly and skillfully treat the emergency sparked an immediate fascination in young Rowland. She interviewed him about his profession on the spot, and he hired her as a technician while she finished her degree.

By the time she entered medical school, her goal was laser-focused: She was going to be an ophthalmologist. Though she originally considered optometry for its shorter educational timeline, her exceptional academic marks and test scores pushed her toward medical school. She wanted a broader, deeper medical foundation that would allow her to handle complex eye diseases and surgical care.

Throughout her intense medical training — during which she welcomed her first son — and 22 years of subsequent practice, she never lost that initial passion.

The Road to Independence

Before establishing EnVision Eye Institute, Rowland spent over two decades learning the ins and outs of different medical practice models. She initially joined a group of downtown physicians nearing retirement before spending 14 years working within a large, multispecialty medical clinic. She later worked with a regional eye-only practice serving patients across Foley, Pensacola, Gulf Breeze and Spanish Fort.

While these experiences were invaluable, they ultimately fueled her desire for independence. Rowland wanted control over daily operations, a dedicated team that shared her vision and the freedom to prioritize the patient experience over corporate metrics.

Launching EnVision Eye Institute required grit. Bound by a two-year noncompete clause from her previous group, she returned to her roots in Crestview. In March 2024, she opened a small office and built her practice from scratch, guided by the support and shared resources of local pediatric ophthalmologist Tiffany Kruger, M.D.

Once the noncompete expired, Rowland’s vision fully materialized. She recently expanded, opening her brand-new Pensacola office. Today, she splits her time equally between Crestview and Pensacola, operating as the sole physician with long-term plans to bring on additional providers and expand to multiple locations.

Medical Expertise Meets Aesthetics

The advanced technology Rowland uses to treat ocular conditions doubles as a tool for cosmetic rejuvenation. The Optilight IPL therapy used for dry eye and rosacea can also reduce facial redness, diminish spider veins, reduce brown spots and improve mild wrinkles.

Because of this, Rowland launched Glow Aesthetics within her practice. Currently, she personally administers Botox cosmetic treatments, while her staff performs specialized procedures under her direct guidance.

With the aesthetic side of the practice growing rapidly, Rowland is currently expanding the team to include a dedicated, part-time nurse practitioner focused solely on Glow Aesthetics. Soon, the practice will be able to offer expanded filler options, comprehensive cosmetic procedures and permanent makeup.

Faith, Family and Four-Legged Officers

Behind Rowland’s impressive clinical resume is a rich, vibrant local life. She is deeply supported by her husband, Keith Salvator, who works in medical sales. Boasting an outgoing, complementary personality to Rowland’s focused nature, Salvator excels at keeping life fun and lighthearted. Together, they have two sons, Joseph and Sam, who both live locally. They balance work and higher education, and they gather frequently for family time.

The Rowland-Salvator household is rounded out by two beloved doodles who double as EnVision Eye Institute’s unofficial mascots. There is Shelby, a mature goldendoodle who has completely perfected the classic “doggie eye roll,” and Hank, an energetic 3-year-old Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever doodle.

Hank officially serves as the clinic’s “Head of Security” and was even spotted celebrating at the recent Pensacola Chamber ribbon-cutting event. Both pups split their time between the two offices and are proudly featured on the practice website.

When she steps away from the clinic, Rowland fuels her high energy by working out at the Alpha Omega CrossFit gym in Pensacola, usually followed by an invigorating cold plunge. She is an avid walker, gardener and reader. She is obsessed with borrowing fiction books from the local library and streaming audiobooks and podcasts dedicated to business and self-development. While she enjoys traveling with Keith, she jokes that there’s rarely as much travel as her outgoing husband would prefer.

Deeply Rooted in the Gulf Coast

For Rowland, treating patients is just one part of her commitment to the region. She is deeply invested in local community life, actively participating in her church, the Junior League, Rotary and the Chambers of Commerce for both Pensacola and Crestview. Professionally, she stays connected to her peers via the Escambia County Medical Society.

Whether she is volunteering, donating her time to local charities or expanding her clinical services, Rowland is thrilled to be rebuilding her local connections in Pensacola while remaining an anchor of health in Crestview. EnVision Eye Institute isn’t just an eye clinic — it’s a testament to what happens when clinical excellence meets true community care.

A Premier Dry Eye Specialty Clinic

“Many patients only think of eye care when they need a new prescription for glasses or contacts,” Rowland noted. EnVision Eye Institute, however, specializes in nonrefractive eye disease states, handling cases that require sophisticated diagnostic imaging and highly tailored treatment protocols.

Meibography: Imaging to evaluate the oil layer that keeps tears from evaporating too quickly.

High magnification: Detailed inspection of the eye surface and eyelid margins.

Evaporation measurements: Photos and tracking to capture how fast tear film breaks down.

Interactive education: Use of high-definition screens to review results, with detailed information emailed immediately.

Customized Treatment Options

Because no two eyes are the same, Rowland develops customized treatment plans for every patient:

Curated OTC products: Preservative-free, ophthalmologist-tested and approved eye and lid products are available in-office with personalized product guides.

Prescription and insurance navigation: Trained staff help with each step of the process.

In-office lid hygiene: Shampoo treatments and Blephex exfoliating procedures that can provide immediate relief.

Optilight IPL therapy: Intense Pulsed Light therapy that reduces inflammation, improves tear quality, minimizes skin redness and addresses facial rosacea.

Autologous serum drops: Customized eye drops crafted from the patient’s blood that contain natural healing factors.

Amniotic membrane grafts: Biological bandages used to rapidly heal and regenerate a damaged corneal surface.

Tear retention: Specialized hardening gels placed in the tear ducts to naturally retain moisture.

Comprehensive Disease Management

Beyond dry eye, EnVision Eye Institute provides advanced evaluation and treatment for glaucoma and other complex eye conditions. These procedures are done in-office and ensure patient comfort:

Evaluations: Dilated eye exams, optic nerve imaging and peripheral vision testing utilizing VR technology.

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty: A gentle, five-minute procedure with minimal discomfort that successfully lowers eye pressure for several years.

Laser Peripheral Iridotomy: Laser treatment for narrow-angle or closed-angle glaucoma.

Durysta injections: Long-lasting medication delivery placed directly in the eye during a quick in-office procedure.

Ongoing disease monitoring: Evaluation for ocular drug toxicity, double vision, peripheral vision loss and localized eye damage.

Collaborative care: Direct communication with patients’ medical teams to ensure coordinated treatment.

A Center for Thyroid Eye Disease

EnVision Eye Institute serves as a regional referral center for thyroid eye disease, a rare autoimmune condition that can threaten both vision and long-term eye health.

Specialized expertise: Rowland is among the few regional specialists treating TED and regularly consults and speaks on the condition through professional medical organizations.

Advanced diagnostics: Coordination of MRI scans, CT imaging and specialized lab work when necessary.

Comprehensive TED management: Evaluation of swelling, double vision, optic nerve compression and ocular inflammation.

Tepezza infusions: In-office administration of the first FDA-approved treatment designed to target the underlying causes of thyroid eye disease.
